Wheelchair Connection Solution Proves AT&T Creativity

Wheelchair Connection Solution By AT&T

In yet another show of their creativity prowess in the internet industry, AT&T has come up with a proof of concept solution that makes it possible to connect wheelchairs wirelessly for improved freedom and independence.

The new concept is in collaboration with Permobil and makes good use of AT&T’s Internet of Things (IoT) technology. It is very easy to monitor the wheelchair in terms of performance, comfort, maintenance requirements as well as location. The connected wheelchair concept was unveiled at the 2015 CTIA Super Mobility 2015 in Las Vegas on September 9.

A press statement released by AT&T before the unveiling of the concept said; “The solution, being developed and tested at the AT&T Foundry for IoT innovation, allows users to access data that impacts their everyday life. The data, that can be remotely accessed in the highly secure cloud and shared with caregivers, fleet technicians and clinicians, can be used to improve the users’ health.”

Users of the new concept will be able to monitor vital aspects of their wheelchair. For instance, the cushion pressure and seating position is one of those aspects. On this, the company said; “Users will know if their ROHO seat cushion pressure is out of range which can lead to life-threatening pressure ulcers. The solution complements Permobil’s Virtual Seating Coach, an app and cloud service that presents seating system information and tracks if users are following recommended seat function regimens.”

Additionally, it will be possible to monitor the level of battery, fleet management and GPS location. Mike Troiano, the Vice President AT&T Industrial IoT Solutions spoke positively about the new discovery that puts AT&T on top of its competitors as far as innovation is concerned. “The connected wheelchair is a great example of how the AT&T Foundry can quickly collaborate with a customer on a proof of concept to bring connectivity and intelligence to a new range of devices.”
